I think that the central message of The Great Gatsby was that no matter how much you pursue something it doesn't end up happening the way you wanted. It could simply be a possibility of what can happen. Here are some reasons why I think that's the central message.

• Gatsby tried to have a life with Daisy
• George, Myrtles's husband, pursued revenge on Gatsby for "killing" Myrtle and succeeded
